Work Based Learning: Purpose

Work Based Learning (WBL) is an educational plan based on a cooperative arrangement by JSCC and employers to provide practical work experience for students. WBL integrates classroom learning with supervised work experience in an employment situation directly related to the educational program of a student. The primary purpose of a WBL program is to reinforce academic knowledge with work experience.

The purpose of the Work Based Learning Workbook is to:

STEPS TO COMPLETE WORKBOOK:

  1. Provide the required information on the outside cover of the workbook.
  2. Read the “WBL Requirements” on page 4.
  3. Read the “WBL Agreement” on pages 5–6 and obtain the required signatures needed at the bottom of page 6.
  4. Read the “Instructions for Writing Measurable Learning Objectives” on pages 7–8 and complete the exercise on page 8.
  5. Write three (3) Measurable Learning Objectives (MLOs) on page 9 and sign at the bottom.
  6. Obtain your supervisor’s signature once the MLOs are approved.
  7. Make arrangements to review the objectives with your WBL Coordinator to obtain an approval signature.
  8. Maintain the time/wage report on pages 10–11 throughout the semester and have your supervisor sign and verify hours worked at the end of your WBL work experience.
  9. At the end of the WBL work experience, have your supervisor complete the evaluations on pages 14–15. Instructions for the employer evaluations are found on page 12.
  10. Complete the self-evaluation on page 13 and pages 16–17.
  11. Submit the completed workbook on or before the date indicated by your WBL Coordinator.
  12. WBL COORDINATOR – completes pages 18–19. If needed, add additional pages for extra site visits.
